Electric Superintendent, Columbiana

What is it like working in public power? What inspired you to work in this sector?

Working in public power is like being in a big family. I really wanted to come home and work for Columbiana when I saw the electric trucks in the Christmas parade — I thought of how cool it would be to become a part of that.

Who in public power has inspired you? Is there another leader/mentor who inspires you? What type of leader do you aspire to be?

Doug Sturgeon was a great superintendent and was always looking for improvements to better the system for our community. City Manager Lance Willard always picks me up when I am down and shows me other paths in management. Both have provided a great deal of inspiration. I want to be a leader who gives everything I can to the people and community that I serve. I want to be the best and safest while serving in public power.

How do you approach your own professional development and career progression, and what sources do you lean on for that?

I try to be a giant sponge when I get around other people in public power, such as at the AMP Annual Conference and Technical Services Conference. I try to attend as many safety and learning seminars as I can. We also have a great team of outside resources that I lean on, including the engineering consultants from GPD Group, John Courtney of Courtney and Associates, and Dan Cothern of Wesco. They are always willing to give me a hand whenever I call or need assistance.

What accomplishments in your role in public power give you the most satisfaction or make you proud of your work?

I find the most satisfaction in being the best that I can be while making safety the top priority in the electric department. I like to make sure my entire team goes home safely at night.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their career in public power or who is looking to progress in their career?

Never give up. Keep learning and become a giant sponge that asks a lot of questions. When there is a safety or learning seminar, jump at the chance to go. Public power is a great career path.
