American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP) was established to own or operate electric facilities or manage the generation, transmission and distribution of electric power and energy to its Members.

While power supply remains its primary mission, AMP offers a wide variety of other services to help Member communities improve the quality of municipal utility services to their customers.

AMP provides these services on a cooperative, nonprofit basis for the mutual benefit of all Member communities. AMP also offers select services to non-members.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Program

AMP offers the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Program, a digital enablement platform, to Member utilities to help them collect detailed metering information throughout the utility's service area. AMP's AMI Program provides an advanced metering infrastructure solution built to meet the unique needs, objectives and complexities of municipal electric systems.

Aggregation Consulting Services

Through its wholly-owned taxable subsidiary, AMPO, Inc., American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP) provides consulting services to both electric and natural gas aggregations. With its greater bargaining power, the buying group may be able to secure lower or more stable prices in today's competitive market.

AMP Awards Program

The AMP Awards Program provides a great opportunity for AMP Members to spotlight the outstanding projects and people in their communities. The award recipients are recognized at the AMP Annual Conference.

AMP Transmission

AMP Transmission, LLC (AMPT) is a wholly owned, not-for-profit limited liability company formed to plan, build, own and operate transmission facilities for the benefit of AMP's Members.

Annual Conference

The AMP Annual Conference, the premier event for AMP Member public power leaders, provides an opportunity to learn from industry experts and network with peers.

Circuit Rider

The Circuit Rider program, which has been assisting AMP Members since 1986, offers communities the services of a qualified electric field superintendent.

Community Energy Savings: Smart Thermostat Program

The Smart Thermostat Program is a subscription-based service that uses a distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) that allows subscribing AMP Members to manage enrolled Wi-Fi connected thermostats during summer peak demand events.

Community Outreach

AMP offers a number of projects, programs and awards to help Members promote the value of public power in their communities.

Economic Development

Business development and retention are important to public power communities. AMP recognizes that and offers support to Member communities through the Economic Development Program, designed to foster load growth within those communities, and through the Key Accounts Program, which provides Members with value-added services designed to develop and enhance relationships with their key account customers.

EcoSmart Choice®

EcoSmart Choice® is a green-pricing program that provides participating AMP Members the ability to extend renewable generation to their residential, commercial and/or industrial customers.

Efficiency Smart®

Efficiency Smart® is administered by VEIC and provides a wide range of energy efficiency services for subscribing AMP Member utilities, including financial incentives, technical assistance and account management services.

Energy Control Center

The AMP Energy Control Center, operating around the clock, 365 days a year, is the nerve center for AMP's power and transmission acquisition efforts.

Engineering and Technical Services

AMP offers its Members a variety of technical services — from engineering, environmental services to lineworker and technical training and mutual aid — to help them improve the quality of service they offer their customers.

Financial

AMP provides financial services to assist the AMP membership through financing capital projects, educational forums and financial reviews.

Generation

AMP's Generation Operations group provides the administration, management and oversight of AMP generation assets.

Hometown Connections

AMP is a joint owner of Hometown Connections, Inc. (HCI). HCI, formed in 2018, is a non-profit utility services organization that offers public power utilities guidance and access to quality products and services from an entity with public power's best interests in mind.

Key Accounts

AMP's Key Accounts Services Program provides Members with value-added services designed to develop and enhance relationship with their existing key account customers.

Legislative, Regulatory & Legal

AMP's legal team serves as an excellent resource to assist Member systems and their local legal counsel; AMP intervenes in regulatory proceedings at state and federal regulatory agencies when decisions could impact AMP Members.

Mutual Aid

The Mutual Aid program is a network of municipal electric systems that stand ready to provide assistance to fellow municipal systems during emergencies that are too widespread to be handled by one system alone.

OSHA Compliance

AMP's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance program began in 2001. The contractual-based program expands on AMP's general safety program.

Power Supply

To meet the power-supply needs of its member systems, AMP manages a diversified portfolio of AMP- and member-owned generation in addition to long-term power-purchase contracts.

Promotions and Public Relations

AMP offers a number of projects, programs and awards to assist member communities in promoting public power and their municipal electric systems.

Publications

AMP publishes a number of digital publications to inform member communities and their customers about AMP operations and the electric industry in general. AMP's weekly e-newsletter, Update, and its digital magazine, Amplifier, offer articles on developments, issues and trends involving AMP, its Members and the electric industry.

Safety Programs

AMP presents safety courses and meetings to its Members on a quarterly basis and maintains a year-round safety program for municipal and electric utility employees and the public.

Scholarships Program

AMP's Scholarships Program was developed to encourage high school seniors in AMP Member communities to further their education and to create an awareness of careers in public power.

Technical Training Program

AMP offers utility employee training courses to improve skills and increase knowledge of utility operations.

Sustainability

AMP promotes sustainability initiatives to its Members and to the public. In 2021, the AMP Board of Trustees updated AMP's Sustainability Principles to encompass broader corporate sustainability goals and objectives.
