Columbus – The city of Cannelton, Indiana, has become the newest member of American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP). The AMP Board of Trustees recently approved the application accepting the south-central Indiana community as the 130th member of the organization. AMP now has members in eight states.
AMP is a leader in wholesale energy supply and value-added member services for publically owned electric utilities. The organization was formed in 1971 with 26 members, all from Ohio, and has grown substantially both in membership and in services offered. Cannelton becomes the first member from the state of Indiana.
“We are pleased to welcome Cannelton to the AMP membership,” AMP President/CEO Marc Gerken said. “We have gained familiarity with the community as we have continued development of our Cannelton Hydroelectric plant located close by on the south side of the Cannelton Locks and Dam. Several years ago, the AMP Board of Trustees established criteria for membership that has guided the organization’s growth and continues to ensure the financial stability of AMP and its members. The partnership between AMP and its members is beneficial to all. We look forward to working with the utility in meeting the challenges of a complicated and ever-changing industry. Additionally, the economies of scale and further diversification benefit all AMP members.”
Located in Perry County, Cannelton has a population of approximately 1,560. The electric system was established in 1949 and serves 937 total meters.
