AMP Scholarships Program

Since 1988, American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP) has distributed $498,000 in scholarship awards.

Scholarships Program Goals

  • To encourage high school students in our Member communities to further their education.
  • To create an awareness of careers in the municipal electric utility field.

The Richard H. Gorsuch Scholarship

Richard H. Gorsuch was president of American Municipal Power-Ohio from 1983 until his death in 1987. Gorsuch is remembered for the vital role he played in protecting public power interests, promoting the advantages of municipally owned electric utilities and advancing public power on local, state and national levels. The scholarship was created and named in his honor in 1988.

This one-time scholarship award of $3,000 is presented to as many as five students annually who meet criteria including:

  • Nominee must be a student whose parent or guardian is an employee of AMP or an AMP Member. If the parent or guardian is an employee of an AMP Member, that parent or guardian must:
    • Work directly for, or provide management or leadership of, the electric utility, electric utility department, or joint action agency; or
    • Spend at least 30% of their time directly supporting electric utility operations.
  • Nominee must be a graduating senior who has met all the basic requirements for college or technical school entrance and has a cumulative, unweighted grade-point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale.

Full Richard H. Gorsuch Scholarship Program Guidelines

The Lyle B. Wright Scholarship 

Lyle B. Wright was a strong public power advocate on both state and local levels. He served on the boards of both American Municipal Power-Ohio Inc. and the Ohio Municipal Electric Association. The scholarship was created and named in his honor in 1989.

This one-time scholarship award of $3,000 is presented to as many as five students annually who meet criteria including:

  • Nominee must be a student whose household (the student currently resides in) receives electricity from an AMP Member community.
  • Nominee must be a graduating senior who has met all the basic requirements for college or technical school entrance and has a cumulative, unweighted grade-point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale.
  • A student is not eligible if they or a parent or guardian is an employee of AMP or an AMP Member who:
    • Works directly for, or provides management or leadership of, the electric utility, electric utility department, or joint action agency; or
    • Spends at least 30% of their time directly supporting electric utility operations.

Full Lyle B. Wright Scholarship Program Guidelines

Winners of both awards are determined through:

  • Personal achievement, school/community activities.
  • Knowledge of public power based on an online test administered at the local municipal utility.
  • Scholastic record.

The Kyle Andrew Krieger Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of Kyle Andrew Krieger, who graduated from The Ohio State University in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, and who was filled with a passion for learning and academic excellence. During his time at Ohio State, he worked as an intern at American Municipal Power, Inc., in the Generation Operations Department during the summer of 2014. In that role, he worked cooperatively with AMP contractors during the construction of a hydroelectric plant on the Ohio River at the Willow Island Locks and Dam.

This one-time scholarship award of $3,000 is presented annually to one student who:

  • Has completed an internship at AMP within the past 24 months
  • Is currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in engineering at a university
  • Has at least one year of education remaining in pursuit of either a bachelor’s or master’s degree
  • Provides confirmation of enrollment in good standing as a student pursuing either a bachelor or master’s in engineering
  • Submits a personal statement
